Life Beneath The Waves

The Dove Marine Laboratory, right in Cullercoats Harbour, is a part of the Department of Marine Sciences and Coastal Management in the University of Newcastle. Internationally acclaimed research into fisheries and the marine environment is carried out here. In addition, the Department's marine biology students come to Cullercoats as part of their degree programme. The students really enjoy their trips to the Dove, investigating marine organisms at a coastal location. Here some undergraduates are getting their first taste of 'life on board' on the Department's own research vessel, the R.V. Bernicia.
The Dove opens its doors to schools and provides an exciting range of laboratory and field based activities. These focus on the marine environment, and on ecology in general. All activities are directly linked to current national curriculum specifications. Students from St Thomas More School in North Shields carry out a survey of the rocky shore at Cullercoats.
During October and November 2001 the Dove Marine Laboratory ran a marine biology programme for Year 4 and Year 5 students on Saturday mornings. This project was funded by the North Tyneside Council Schools Service, the New Opportunities Fund and Valley Gardens Middle School. Twenty pupils from a number of local schools explored the rocky shore, learnt about the ways different marine animals feed, and used microscopes to view tiny marine creatures. Two more of these popular courses will run in 2002.
