On January 1st 1861, Cullercoats Lifeboat was asked to save life on a brig called "Lovely Nelly". "The Women", painted in 1904 by John Charlton, dramatically shows the women of Cullercoats pulling the lifeboat through a blizzard to launch it near the wreck.
